Artist Statement:
The work in this solo exhibition at Lucy Lacoste Gallery represents multiple firing techniques in the Ice Flow, and Oribe Reborn series, as well as natural ash wood firing and a new series of work fired in saggers. I use a number of techniques in both the forming process and the firing process; sometimes choosing to work with overlapping slips and glazes to create new surfaces. Rather than being pigeon holed as an artist who works in one particular way, I choose to have the freedom to experiment and break rules as to how I approach using clay as a material. Kilns are merely tools that are to be utilized in a way that best serves the pieces I am making. To that end, I may use electric kilns and wood kilns in a non traditional way, and combine firing techniques to produce a new range of surfaces.
The long relationship with Lucy Lacoste Gallery has endured and evolved for more than 20 years. I’m pleased to have this opportunity to show some of the newest work and hope that many of you have a chance to visit the gallery in person, or view the exhibition online. -- Jeff Shapiro
Artist Biography:
Jeff Shapiro was born in the Bronx and presently works and lives in upstate NY. From 1973-1981 he lived in Japan and studied ceramic arts. His work has been exhibited internationally in Germany, France, Italy, Australia, Canada, and Japan and is held in numerous museum collections, including Sevre Museum, Paris, France; Carlo Zauli Museum, Faenza, Italy; MFA, Boston, MA; Brooklyn Museum, Brooklyn, NY; Everson Museum, Syracuse, NY; and Fuller Craft Museum, Brockton, MA. Over the years Shapiro has given numerous workshops and seminars around the world and has built two wood firekilns in Italy. He continues to exhibit internationally and maintains close ties to Japan.
